Dear Donna -- What about what I eat?
Does what I eat, or not eat, affect my spiritual growth? Must I become a vegetarian to attain enlightenment? Do I need to fast regularly in order to raise my consciousness? I am very confused and am searching for truth.
Dear Searching, Everything you do, or do not do, affects your spiritual growth. You do not have to become a vegetarian to attain enlightenment, but if you feel guilty about eating animals, quit. Guilt is a dark emotion and in direct conflict with your goal. Fasting raises your consciousness by making you more aware of your physical body. The more you know about yourself -- your physical, mental and spiritual selves -- the more you will understand and appreciate the wonders of being human. To know thyself is to know the nature of humanity. To the enlightened master, what goes into the mouth is not as important as the words that come out of it.
